They came to Senegal to offer the Christians of the country the possibility to lead a contemplative life according to their religious and cultural traditions. Some young Senegalese were attracted by the ideal of the monastic life. The monks conducted an adaptation work, by making a liturgical use of African melodies and musical instruments, in collaboration with the clergy and the secular Senegalese. Masses on Sunday morning are well known for their music. (You can attend the mass if your visit falls on a Sunday). To manage living as much as possible with hand work, monks cultivated the land they had and that which now produces, with the help of a drilling, fruits and vegetables. A small cheese dairy enables manufacture of goats’cheese realized by the monks themselves with milk from herds in the region. Broiler poultry farms, as well as a workshop producing koras supplement the economic activities of the monastery.
